I recently visited the spectacular House of Dior Exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria and I was very impressed…
The exhibition is a celebration of the 70th anniversary of The House of Dior, one of the world’s most prestigious couture houses. 140 garments designed by Christian Dior Couture between 1947 and 2017 are on display, featuring works by seven famous designers including Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Marc Bohan, Gianfranco Ferre, John Galliano, Raf Simons and Maria Grazia Chiuri.
While moving through the exhibition, captivated by the beautiful designs, it occurred to me how similar designing a couture outfit is to design the perfect event.
Both Couture and event design and styling follow a very intricate process, including:
- coming up with a design concept;
- sketching the design;
- choosing the right fabric and elements;
- putting it together piece by piece;
- testing the functionality of the pieces to ensure it fits the client brief;
- executing the final design; and
- adding the final touches and WOW factor with styling, presentation and flair.
Just one design is a journey that can take months (if not a year) to implement, depending on its complexity.
Of absolute importance is the “theme” on which the design is based – which is how the National Gallery of Victoria chose to display the works (in a series of themes). The theme gives you a focal point on which to base all of your design decisions and ensures that the finished product aligns with your vision.
As an event designer, I am in awe of any display of spectacular design, and appreciate the effort that goes into creating the final product. I know the hard work and dedication of the End2End Events team in creating tailored (couture) events, and my own obsession with attention to detail in ensuring every element works together to elicit a WOW response.
No event is ever the same, even if it belongs to the same story or category of events. It is made special because it is designed for you. Tailored to you. Created with you in mind.
That’s the beauty of couture and the beauty of an End2End Event Melbourne.
Thank you to the National Gallery of Victoria, and the House of Dior for the 70th-anniversary exhibition. It was truly inspiring, and I am grateful to have been able to see it.
