Healthy Eating Options for Events

21 July 2017

In recent years, there has been a push towards healthy eating in schools, workplaces and public places. Governments and health organisations have weighed in, documenting and publicising their recommendations for providing healthy food options wherever and whenever possible.

This also extends to event planning for work functions, conferences, seminars, cocktails, product launches and so on. Traditionally, these types of events have been seen as “the time and place” to indulge in the sweeter things in life. And though there will always be room for cakes and pastries, catering to today’s guests requires a much broader approach and appreciation for healthy eating.

Of all the people who will attend your next event, a significant portion will be:

  • Health conscious
  • Vegetarian
  • Vegan
  • Diabetic
  • Gluten-free
  • Allergic to dairy, soy, nuts and other

With this in mind, it’s important to make the right decisions when you book a caterer or organise catering for events so that you do not unintentionally exclude anyone.

The food doesn’t have to be boring or tasteless. In fact, healthy and sustainable food options are quite trendy at the moment – and a little ingenious thinking on your part could see your event food selection (and your event) receive some great organic publicity via social media uploads and sharing.

Many caterers have also evolved their businesses to accommodate the changing tastes of guests, and usually, offer a wide variety of choices to help you cover all the bases. If you are set on having a particular supplier for dessert, you might like to consider a second supplier who can provide a quality selection of fruits, vegetables, and vegan/vegetarian/gluten-free options.

Some healthy eating options for events include:

  • Fruit and Grazing platters (amazing when arranged artistically!)
  • Gourmet Salad Stations
  • Vegetable canapés
  • Grilled or roasted entrees
  • Fresh seafood
  • Soups
  • “Make your own” station – with a selection of healthy ingredients and whole foods for creating a pizza, noodle dish or even a sushi roll!
  • Mushroom or eggplant burgers
  • Gluten-free selections
  • Sparkling water and Coconut water

So for your next event, consider the trend towards healthy eating, make a statement and set your event apart from the rest! Experiment with ideas, talk to caterers, and choose a solution that will have every attendee wanting more…
